The IBM TS2900 Tape Autoloader is designed for entry-level automated backup for rack system and small to midsize business environments. With a low-profile, high-density storage capacity, the TS2900 is ideally suited for backup and archival operations. The TS2900 is available with half-height LTO Ultrium 8, 7, 6 or 5 tape technology for a high-capacity, entry-priced tape storage solution.

The TS2900 is equipped with standard features designed to provide ease-of-use and secured data backup. Web-based remote management, a bar code reader and a removable tape magazine help provide ease of use. The TS2900 can be used in a rack system or on a desktop next to a server in an office. These types of features help reduce the amount of required IT personnel, as well as help centralize backups in the data center. The TS2900 is also designed to support the encryption of sensitive user data in combination with half-height LTO Ultrium 8, 7, 6 or 5 tape technology. With a 6 Gbps serial-attached SCSI (SAS) interface, the TS2900 is supported on IBM System x®, Intel and other competitor open-system server platforms. The TS2900 Tape Autoloader has a nine-data-slot cartridge capacity for a total storage capacity of up to 270 TB with 2.5:1 compression, as well as a single I/O station designed to provide undisturbed library operation when extracting or inserting data cartridges. The TS2900 utilizes one half-height LTO Ultrium drive—generation 8, 7, 6, or 5. The TS2900 is shipped as a rack-mount unit with the option of a desktop conversion kit. Half-height LTO Ultrium 8 tape drives are designed to read and write data at a transfer rate of up to 300 MBps and store up to 12TB native on a single LTO Ultrium 8 data cartridge (30 TB with 2.5:1 compression). LTO Ultrium 8 technology is designed with the ability to read and write data to LTO Ultrium 7 data cartridges, thus helping to protect current investments in LTO Ultrium cartridges.

The modular design enables users to increase cartridge and drive capacity as needed. Built around a 3U-high, modular base library, TS4300 can scale vertically with up to sixteen modules, with expansion for Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium Cartridge Family, drives and redundant power supplies. A single robot manages all modules in the stack. In a sixteen-module configuration, TS4300 offers a capacity of 640 LTO cartridges.

Security compliance capabilities

Requirements for secure, long-term data retention especially in the financial services, healthcare and life sciences industries are common and increasingly stringent, with data volumes escalating exponentially. Data stored on offline tape or write-once media, is nearly impervious to hacking.

Base library for complete management

The base library contains all the necessary robotics and intelligence to manage the base library system, with a maximum of 40 slots of LTO cartridge capacity per module, five input/output (I/O) slots, and support for three combinations of full- and/or half-height (FH or HH) LTO drives per module. The TS4300 base library is rack or tabletop mountable. Module expansions are only rack mountable.

The SAS interface of these tape drives enables them to connect to a wide spectrum of open-system servers. The LTO Ultrium tape media provides partitioning support, which, in conjunction with IBM Spectrum Archive, provides users with file-level access to tape data. This support helps users quickly locate and update information on the tape media. LTO Ultrium technology is also designed to natively support data encryption, with core hardware encryption and decryption capabilities resident in the LTO 9, 8, or 7 Ultrium tape drive itself.

Software Support

Management solutions such as IBM Spectrum Protect or third-party storage management software can extend the power of the TS2270, TS2280, and TS2290. IBM Spectrum Archive helps simplify access and management of TS2290 by enabling text-based file tagging, enabling more intuitive searches of drive content. This software creates an efficient “data footprint” to dynamically store every bit of data, helping maximize performance and ensure security. Archiving enables storage of digital assets for the long term, so assets can be referenced and monetized for years to come. IBM Spectrum Archive supports the tape-oriented Linear Tape File System (LTFS) and helps reduce complexity by enabling a graphical user interface to the tape drive’s contents using the operating system file manager. These features together help make tape-based data as easy to find and access as disk- or flash-based data. In addition, LTFS-capable tape drives are designed to be interchangeable among compatible LTO tape drives and supported operating systems, so administrators do not have to worry about hardware or software compatibility. With LTFS, managers can quickly access, store or archive files on tape, and transport files to and from different locations in a very easy to use format. Anyone in need of fast and reliable access to inactive ‘cold’ data—like movie and music producers, post-production editors, broadcasters, digital video surveillance managers, and cloud and storage managers—now has an affordable solution to access and more easily archive high-quality files.
