Microsoft Windows Server 2022 este cea mai recentă versiune a sistemului de operare pentru servere, dedicată companiilor moderne care operează atât în mediile IT de tip cloud, cât și cele locale. Îmbunătățirile aduse capacităților de securitate (de exemplu, serverul cu nucleu securizat și protocolul implicit TLS 1.3), asistența pentru soluții hibride (Azure și locale) și Microsoft Edge preinstalat (în locul Internet Explorer, care a fost retras) reprezintă o mică parte din noile caracteristici ale Windows Server 2022, alături de numeroase îmbunătățiri generale de performanță.

Windows Server 2022 este disponibil în două ediții principale:

  • Standard – alegerea de bază pentru toate organizațiile care au nevoie de caracteristicile clasice ale Windows Server, cum ar fi conexiunile RDS, virtualizarea etc.
  • Datacenter – conceput pentru companiile cu medii IT puternic virtualizate.

În afară de aceasta, mai există încă două ediții dedicate situațiilor specializate:

  • Essentials – această ediție cu licență OEM are aceleași caracteristici ca ediția Standard, dar este limitată la un CPU cu 1 socket și 10 nuclee.
  • Datacenter Azure – o ediție Datacenter dedicată exclusiv mediilor puternic virtualizate în Azure.

Regulile de licențiere Windows Server 2022 aplică o metodă bazată pe nucleu, ceea ce înseamnă că o licență de nucleu trebuie să fie atribuită fiecărui nucleu fizic de pe server (minimum 16 licențe de nucleu pe server). În plus, fiecare utilizator și/sau dispozitiv care accesează serverul și serviciile sale trebuie să fie licențiat cu o licență CAL (Client Access License – Licențe de acces client).
